I forgot to mention adding users.  You'll need to use smbpasswd -a from a root 
terminal to do that (there may be a gui for this - I think much of the 
configuration can be done from kde control panel, for instance, but remember, 
don't do anything before saving a copy of smb.conf).  HTH
