OpenDocument format completly broken!

Odd. You mentioned that your home directory is an NFS share. I wonder
if this problem is related to a one-time network glitch. It is a
low probablility hazard with NFS shares.

You cannot open the documents in Abiword, or you can open the
documents but not the illos in Abiword?

I would check to see whether Aiword supports the image formats (JPEG,
PNG, GIF, etc.) you used.
