weird removable media behavior

For my digital camera (CF media), I have a USB card reader (i.e. remove 
card from camera and put into reader).

When I plug the reader in, I get 2 icons on the desktop [Removable 
Volume and Removable Volume (2)], and 2 gThumb instances 
[/media/disk/dcim and /media/disk-1/dcim]

Why? What do I tweak so that I get only 1 of each?

There is an entry for System - Prefs - Removable Drive and Media - 
Cameras: "import ..." is checked; command: gthumb-import %h

N.b.: I have FC 6 and gnome.
