The contents of the hard drive are not affected by running memtest.
It test RAM, not the hard drive. Putting an entry in the grub menu
just gives you an easy way to launch memtest. Remember, memtest has
to be run by itself - think of it as a limited operating system that
 only does one thing - test the memory system of your system. It can
show errors in good RAM if you have other problems that cause memory
errors. For example, it may show errors if you have the BIOS set
wrong for your memory, even though the memory itself is fine.
