IMAPS and/or openssl problem

Check /var/log/messages to see if anything is logged.  The behavior of
telnet sounds like the behavior of openssl.  It's probably not the
firewall, but you could just about rule it out by shutting down the
firewall for a minute, test (e.g., telnet), and then starting it again.
