Only text mode available after install

Hi List;

I'm installing FC5 on a cheap (as in less than $500) laptop for a friend.  The 
install could not run the graphical installer and after the install I only 
have text mode. Running startx errors out with several warnings like this:
'Requesting insufficient memory window!: ....
...
Cannot find a replacement memory range
screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error:
no screens found


If I boot from a Knoppix 5 DVD I get a graphical login

Any help with debugging this would be greatly appreciated.
