help with mud server please

Hello!
I need some help with setting up my mud game.

I run it at home, and I can connect to it, but other people cannot connect to my game.

Today a friend told me that linux has all ports closed by default.
Now I need to know how to open for example port 23, so that my friends can connect to my server.

Is there a console command I can use?

I run fedora core 6
