That is to say its a piece of paper with some claims on it.

Contract cannot pre-empt law, and copyright licenses are even more
restricted in what they may do. In addition common sense is also applied.

Corporate lawyers approach is to add everything they can get away with a
more. They know that unless they do something *really* stupid the only
action of a court will be strike out clauses as unenforcable (typically
those about reselling the license, reverse engineering and in many cases
jurisdiction)
