f7 dead and recovery disk hangs. (SOLVED???)

I opened the case, reseated the drive cables, crossed my fingers and the
system came up.  It seems strangely fragile (it hung in the middle of
writing a DVD for backup) but right now it's stable.  Thanks for all the
suggestions.  I don't know which one worked but I'm back from the dead.
