If you install nss-mnds also,
and change /etc/nsswitch.conf to

hosts:      files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

then, any computer connected to your local network
will be known as "computer_name.local".

There is no need to list it in /etc/hosts.
Otherwise, the only way to refer to it is by its IP.
