I didn't know that grub chainloader was capable of doing this. You
mention doing this with a floppy image, is it possible to boot into

I think it's an option RH/F doesn't build (grub has a few features not normally included), but properly constructed, grub can read from CD:
root (cd)
and even the LAN*
root (nb)


* Requires a driver for your NIC, and drivers take RAM and so it's not normally built that way.
