I would not try pulseaudio on CentOS 4.X.  I run RHELv4.7 (Basically same as 
CentOS4.7) with KDE as my desktop and artsd as my sound server.  No problems.

This is basically a fedora list.  I would go to a CentOS forum or to the 
RHELv4 list (nahant) if I were you.
