That may be it.  glib was updated right before my DNS broke:

Dec 17 19:50:30 Updated: glibc-2.9-3.i686
Dec 17 19:50:52 Updated: glibc-common-2.9-3.i386
Dec 17 19:51:23 Updated: glibc-headers-2.9-3.i386
Dec 17 19:51:26 Updated: glibc-devel-2.9-3.i386

But the last comment there seems to indicate that this release *fixed*
the problem.

For the time being, I've disabled my local DNS and added /etc/hosts entries.
