fc8 how to stop gui pop-up notifications of available updates??

Yeah, that does sound a bit like one of the reasons I dislike M$...

Seriously though. The 'fix' I used to stop yum-updatesd from starting up
might work for you...

Try eliminating all the yum-updatesd links from /etc/rc.d/rc*.d. 

In my case it really stopped yum-updatesd from being initialized at all.

But I'm not so sure that this fix wouldn't sometimes need to be repeated
after doing a yum update...
