/dev/dvd1 instead of /dev/dvd ?

I just replaced my broken IDE dvdrw drive with a new
sata dvdrw drive, and the system seems to see it OK,
but for some reason instead of having /dev/dvd I now
have /dev/dvd1 (which is a symlink to /dev/sr0 and
the old /dev/dvd used to be a symlink to /dev/sr0
as well).

Anyone know why The primary device is still /dev/sr0
but the symlinks all have names like /dev/dvd1 now
(I also have /dev/cdrw1, etc).

Kind of irritating since various defaults are stored
by various programs pointing to places like /dev/dvd...
