i'm not sure if this might be a solution, but have you added the line

  alias wlan0 b43

to /etc/modprobe.conf?  it's just a thought, i'm not sure it will fix
your *exact* problem but it allows b43 to at least show up under the
wireless card choices when you run system-config-network.
