oh, trust me, i've been down *that* road before.  i have a number of
kernel patches in the queue that rip out dead kernel options from the
file Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt file.   and that's why i was
confused by the "single" boot parm -- i was sure i didn't remember it
from that file, but i also didn't realize it was a valid "init"
option.
