Kde4 a step backwards?

I have yet to be able to figure out how to create an application launch icon 
on the desktop or task manager.

Does the task manager have a "hide" feature?  I have yet to discover where to 
control that as well.

How do I permanently get rid of old desktop icons, that were preupgrade?  My 
KDE session doesn't seem to save current setup at log out and doesn't ask me 
if I want to either.
