new items not showing up on desktop

evidently.

i was able to drag 'n' drop a folder from dolphin to the desktop, as either
icon or 'folder view',
but am at a loss as to why folders and files created in konqueror, konsole
or dolphin browsing
the desktop do not produce icons on the screen.
