Try this --it might or it might not work, but it worth a try:

OPTION 1:
- launch Midnight Commander
- select the file.tar.gz and press F2 for Menu
- select 'x' for extracts contents of a compressed tar file.

OPTION 2:
decompress the tarball
    $ gzip -d file.tar.gz
extract what can be salvaged
    $ cpio -ivd -H tar < file.tar
