Another possibility: Does it boot from CD1 of the CD distro?
Once it hangs, can you change VCs (<ctrl>-<alt>-<F2>, etc.)? There's a
shell on VC2 and a few different log streams on VCs 3-5. Maybe one will
give you a hint.
