You cannot update using a LiveCD,
you would need a DVD.


If F8 is working fine on the laptop?

You could try updating using yum:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/YumUpgradeFaq

But look at the *readmes* for
F8 > F9 > F10 > F11

in case of gotchas\workarounds.
