OK, I know I'm really not the best person to review this because I haven't a
single piece of hardware that needs this, but nobody more qualified has stepped
up in over eight months and it's pointless to let this sit aroud when it would
be useful to people.

Perhaps you could answer one question which comes immediately to mind:

Why are some of the firmware files under /lib/firmware and some under
/usr/share/alsa/firmware?
