The hangs you are experiencing all appear to be happening in the same code
where I initially experienced the hang.  If Stephen Turnbull is right, this is
a bug in X, and if my attempted workaround doesn't do the job, then we're just
sunk ... with an X build.  Let's try using emacs-nox or xemacs-nox.  I'll work
up the necessary spec file changes tomorrow after a good night's rest.
