You need to update the desktop database when you install a .desktop file.  You
are not introducing a new mime-type so apparently it isn't necessary to update
the mime database.

This is for file associations, users should be able to select these kinds of
files in (e.g) nautilus and open them in Panini:

MimeType=video/quicktime;image/jpeg;image/tiff;image/png;
