Are you using alsamixer?

By default alsa mutes the inputs and outputs on a soundcard and you
must use alsamixer to unmute them (m key) as well as increase the
level as necessary.

If you don't have alsamixer you can find it at shrike.freshrpms.net in
the alsa-utils package.
