I wish there was one comprehensive site that listed things supported/not
supported well (out of the box with minimal setup and no 3rd party binary
drivers needed) with linux.

linuxprinting.org is a start.

some of the linux vendors have thier own compatibility section, but it's
usually incomplete, they could try combining them... hope springs
eternal..
