nautilus crashes when not drawing desktop

I do not like icons on the desktop and as there seems to be no
direct way of removing them I do not let nautilus draw the desktop.

The most simple way of doing this seems to be to use gconf-editor
and then under apps -> nautilus -> preferences to uncheck the
'show_desktop' item.

This works without problems in RH 9 but under fedora test1/test2
this causes nautilus to crash at the next boot (and first the panel
is drawn with a black bar before the nautilus error message appears).

This also causes programs in a drawer to not start up anymore.

Is this a new development in gnome 4 or a bug.
Anybody experience something like this?

Alexander
