using "firstboot" for further SW installation

from a previous posting, i recall the proposal of using the initial install
to do a "minimal"install, then using "firstboot" to further configure/install.
would this have any implications for estimating space usage that you can
do now?
at the moment, when i install, i can get an estimate of how large to make
the /usr filesystem by selecting "Everything", even if i only plan on installing
a subset of the packages. doing that at least tells me how much space i might
need later if i decide to add everything i left out.
how would leaving additional installation until firstboot affect this? or would
it?
