SATA install issue?

I have an ABIT AV8 (via chipset), with two drives attached to one sata port, 
although with no RAID configured in the BIOS.  WinXP is installed on the 
first drive.  When installing FC3T3, I don't have any obvious problems, but 
grub stage1 appears to not get installed onto the first drive MBR (as is 
configured in the installer) the system reboots into  Windows using the 
windows loader.  Any ideas?
