I incorrectly posted to this list today.
Just to explain that all the weirdness actually was originated  by untar, as
root, of a tar.bz2 file in /tmp at 23.35 yesterday evening ;-(
This file contained at the very beginning:
tar jtvf archive.tar.bz2
drwxr-xr-x login/users         0 2007-03-19 13:56:20 ./
...

So this had the effect of changing permissions of /tmp dir from
drwxrwxrwt 48 root root 36864 2007-07-03 23:28 /tmp
to
drwxr-xr-x 46 1000 users 36864 2007-07-03 23:10 /tmp

(no mapping between uid 1000 and users on my system).

Sorry to all. I think to notify the author of the tar.....
