I feel your pain. The last successful kernel was
kernel-2.6.23.1-49.fc8 for me.
I used the GUI updater and needed to use rpm -ivh
I did not forget.
Afterward, I removed the kernel related packages and rpm -Uvh 
--replacefiles --replacepkgs *.rpm on the other trminated by a locked up 
pup .... to the pound for that pup.
