how to handle now sound control needs?

Of course not, as long as we don't make it difficult for users to work 
around these bugs.  I'd like to see an "advanced mode" or something in 
gnome-volume-control that keeps all the functionality that currently 
exists for controlling individual hardware mixer channels.
