We still have the over the top debugging enabled in teh kernel which may
account for some of the slowness.  It'll be downgraded a touch this week,
and then turned off for the release candidate in a few weeks.

Crap standards, intoxicated BIOS authors, bugs in our ACPI interpretor..
The list goes on.  File a bug on this.  It's a pain to debug these issues
remotely, especially if you don't have a serial console or the like to
get the logs out.   Does it get to a prompt if you boot in single user mode ?
Or does it die long before then ?
