Are you using KDE or GNOME?

Why because if you open the volume control in GNOME, the sound is muted and all the volume tabs are set to 0.  If you unmute(checking in the box) you should hear sound. If you can hear sound, then save your settings with
# alsactl store

and when you reboot you will see/might see that sound is back to mute again.  Do a 
# alsactl restore 

and the saved settings should come back.  Try that and report back.

If the question arises to file a bug, against which package should one do it.  Apparently alsactl has been depracated?
