Keyboard does not work with Grub menu - How widespread?

I wondered if it was the USB keyboard, but...
(1) the mainboard I was using does not have any PS/2 ports -- only USB
-- which I discovered when I tried to plug in a PS/2 device. I think
this will become more and more common.
(2) the second reporter tried a PS/2 keyboard, without success.
