  that fixed it.  this is now my entire xorg.conf (after adding that
one line):

Section "ServerFlags"
	Option "DontZap" "false"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Videocard0"
	Driver "radeon"
	Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
EndSection

i tested three different sites that borked my X session earlier, and
they now all show up fine using XAA.
