In most systems I've seen, the home directory server will maintain
directories in /export/home/<usernames> and they will mount to client
machines as /home/<usernames> or as /home/<domain>/<usernames>.

Local home directories tend to either be avoided completely or stored in
/opt/home.

Now, what we REALLY need (though not for V2) is support for offline home
directories.

I had an idea about this. If we require that home directories have their
own partition, we can configure it such that when online, we mount it to
/opt/home and mount the automount directory in /home. We could then run
an rsync behind the scenes to keep the two directories in sync. Once the
SSSD detects that we have gone offline, it would immediately remount
/opt/home as /home and the user could continue.
