You could try just writing to it using tar. Something like

  tar -cvzf /dev/tape /home

where /dev/tape is the tape device. I just symlink the tape device to
/dev/tape. Then do a
  mt rewind

to rewind it and then

  tar -tvzf /dev/tape

to get a listing of files written to tape.
