It all depends on how big of X you are going to run. I think the memory 
equation goes something like:

The Z dimension if I remember is dependant on the video card, refresh 
rate,  and what you are trying to do (OpenGL make that 32 I think) It is 
also dependant on what other neat effects you want the X server to do.. 
If I remember for some video cards this means having as much ram saved 
for X as you are going to use for buffering and such.

In general I think that for just using the 'frame buffer' install and 
running X at 800x600 you can get away with just 16 mb of ram. This 
means commenting out a lot of the modules in a 4.2 X server.

You will also not be able to run client side sound or any of the other
client side services (floppyd? others?) For safety sake I would say 32mb
is a good minimum for
