Probably should add Intel 8x0 sound to the failure list.
I did a fresh install with 4.1.0 and the server still locked up
on every logout from the console GUI.  I suspect this applies:

Don't know for sure that was the culprit -- but I did experience similar
problems with the onboard sound card not being detected correctly.

Thank goodness for full backups.  -- I'm back to 3.1.2 and all's fine.
