There are functional and stylistic differences.  In a bbs you generally
don't quote anything because the previous article will show right above
yours when the next person sees it anyway, and the topic may drag on
forever with people rarely checking in and posting.  With email
discussions you normally quote enough of the conversation to make
sense out of context and you don't expect answers to come weeks or
months after the question.

If you are lucky, a bbs will organize itself into a FAQ with the
correct answer ending the discussion.  This tends not to work for
topics where the correct answer changes frequently or everyone has
different opinions.
