Were you logged in as a user or as root.  I haven't looked at it in a
while but it seems to me that I remember from earlier versions of LTSP
that if I was logged in at a terminal as root my sound came from the
server.  It was only when I logged in as a user that the sound came from
the terminal.

You may also have to go (on the client, possibly for each user) to
Applications -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Multimedia System
Selector and set up ESD there as well
