I use KDat, a tool that comes w/ KDE.  It's basically a front end for 
tar.  The advantage here is that tar exists on every UNIX variant out 
there and has for a long, long time.  I've taken a tape made w/ KDat and 
restored the data on a Solaris box, for example.
