[K12OSN] Help a newbie, too many variables...

It's a fairly stock Gateway E-1000.  The onboard NIC is a AMD 
79c971.  P233MMX.  Floppy, CDROM, 2 gig hd.  128 megs memory.  Not sure 
about the video, 2 megs vram.  The universal boot floppy really got me 
talkin' to the server.

I tried Les' showmount -e and got an error.  mount clntudp_create: RPC: 
Program not registered.  When I googled it, it indicated that there was 
something wrong with my /etc/hosts file.  So, I'm thrashing around in 
there.  There was also a message on my thin client indicating that this 
could be one of 4 possible problems.

I've rewritten so many files, the problem could be almost anywhere.  I'm 
worried that I've got some little typo somewhere that's screwing everything 
up.  Is there some way to get back to the defaults on all the relevant 
files?  /etc/exports /etc/hosts dhcpd.conf  lts.conf etc.   I think I know 
what I'm doing a little better now, wouldn't make the same mistakes if I 
could start over.
