The "LI" usually indicates a drive geometry error. I usually tell people to
boot from rescue media, edit /etc/lilo.conf to add a "linear" directive and
then rerun /sbin/lilo -v. 9 times out of 10, that fixes it. The LILO docs
explain what's happened when LILO halts after displaying "L", "LI" (quite
common), "LIL", and so on. . .
