Samba works over the Internet. No one in their right mind permits SMB
through their firewall, however. Same with NFS, you don't want to expose
it to the internet. 

Have you looked into WinSCP? http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/
This is much, much, much more sane to access files from home.
