FAB! Thanks for the tip Dan. Changed permissions on /home/guest *and* /tmp/gconfd-guest/ and logged in fine with everything exactly where I left it.

You might want to check the permissions for /home/guest. When copying
things as root, root takes ownership of the copied files. You probably
can just:

# chown -R guest /home/guest
