[K12OSN] Microsoft Office on K12 LTSP

Shane,

I use Crossover Office 4.2 to provide the following to my thin clients:
Accelerated Reader
Photoshop Elements
Microsoft Office
Shockwave
Quicktime
Media Player
Internet Explorer (yes, for the online gradebook by Blackbaud).

We did not go the Network server route. We use the professional
installation (installed managed-multi user RPM) by root. You install
the apps under root, and they are all available to the users. What is
cool is that you can package up your installation into a new RPM (of
course 500+ megs sometimes) and install it on another server... or what
I do is build it on my system, and in the evening update the server's
crossover installation with the new rpm (that has everything installed).
Powerpoint redraw is a little laggy in 4.2 (could be because of X over
network), but it sounds like some of that will be fixed for 5 (due in
sept I think).

What is nice too is Codeweavers only requires you to buy as many
licenses as you would use concurrently. So as you can have less
licenses than thin-clients as long as you are at or above how many
people you expect to be on concurrently. Volume wise, it is about $50
per user.

PDFs.. you can print to the KDE Print system via Word, and then choose
PDF, and poof, you have a PDF!

If anyone wants to know more, just drop me an e-mail. My life is
settling back down now.

Henry
