[K12OSN] OT: best distro for laptop

Dear Rob,

I know I have become very bias, but I would have to suggest a Debian
based system (and closer to Debian core the better <G> ).  I just grew
to dislike the RPM based ones.  

The thing I saw as Mandrake's strength was the newbie friendliness it
had (may still, but have not looked at it for a while) with the hardware
detection, eye-candy etc. But with the advent of Morphix, Mephis, Ubuntu
(sp), and others, I think this is disappearing.  I would personally
suggest Mephis or Ubuntu.  I already have a non-techie, Windows Convert
using Mephis, and I have not had to help her out at all after the
initial install/demo kind of thing. I like Ubuntu because of its
"closeness" to Debian.  Doing an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
won't break the system.  I also just read an article at distrowatch(
http://distrowatch.com/review-kanotix ) that might be right up your
alley.
